The 2026 HUMMER EV Gets a New Feature

And it’s shared with those already on the road. . . .

The GMC HUMMER EV—both SUV and pickup—may be big, but the vehicle is not a big seller.

In Q1 2025 there were 3,479 delivered.

While that number is comparatively low—the company delivered 6,794 Corvettes, another vehicle with a non-trivial MSRP—another way of looking at HUMMER EV sales that appear better is to compare it with the number of Silverado EV and Sierra EV models delivered during the same period of time: 2,383 and 1,249, respectively.

So the behemoth is doing OK by that measure of electric vehicle sales.

Today GMC announced the 2026 HUMMER EV.

The biggest new feature is something called “King Crab.”

This mode allows the rear wheels to turn faster—“significantly faster,” according to the company—than the front wheels.

This is said to improve maneuverability “when navigating tight spaces off-road, moving around obstacles or rock crawling.”

Given that the vehicle is 216.8 inches long and 86.7 inches wide (not including mirrors), or 18.07 feet long and 7.23 feet wide, enhanced maneuverability over the vehicle’s previous four-wheel steer capability is undoubtedly useful.

One interesting thing about King Crab: GMC is making it available to all HUMMER EV owners as an over-the-air update.

That is certainly a nice touch.

And another impressive set of stats: the HUMMER EV 3X Pickup produces 1,160 hp and 13,000 ft-lb of torque.

That’s like something out of a Marvel movie.

GMC Going More Global

GMC sells its vehicles in three non-U.S. markets at present:

  • Canada, where its sales were up 10% in 2023 and where it has a market share of 5.5%
  • The Middle East, where its sales were up 15% compared with 2022
  • Mexico, where its sales were up 14.4%
  • South Korea, where it launched the Sierra LD pickup in 2023

How, you might be wondering, did it do in the U.S. in 2023?

Its retail sales were up 6.5% compared with 2022 and its total sales were up 8.9%, for a total 563,677 units.

(Which vehicle in its lineup were up 279.9% in ’23 compared with ’22? The HUMMER EV. It delivered 3,244. That vehicle has the distinction of being—with the exceptions of the Chevy Blazer EV and Chevy Silverado EV, both of which launched near the end of ’23, so these exceptions are not really comparative, especially as the HUMMER went into production in November 2021—the lowest-selling vehicle of all GM products.)

Feeling bullish about the global demand for vehicles of a large dimension, GMC announced that it will be rolling out the Yukon full-size SUV in Australia, New Zealand and China, with the last-named getting the vehicles in 2024 and the first two in 2025.

GMC sold 82,271 Yukons in the U.S. last year, essentially flat in the context of the 82,304 sold in 2022. While flat isn’t as good as the 279.9% of the HUMMER EV, it is better than the -19.3% of the Canyon, -14.8% of the Savana, or 17% of the Terrain.

General Motors: About Those EV Sales. . .

General Motors was rather chuffed with its U.S. sales results for Q2 2023 as well as for the first half of the year.

It delivered 691,978 vehicles in Q2, up 18.8% from the same period last year. And for the first half it has delivered 1,295,186, or 18.3% more than in the first half of 2022.

Drilling into the electric vehicle space, the company sold in Q2 13,959 Chevy Bolt EV/Bolt EUV models, up an impressive 101%. Even more impressive, with Bolt sales of 33,659 for the first half, that’s a 360.9% increase. However, due to a problem with battery fires that occurred in the summer of 2022 General Motors stopped production of the vehicles as it handled a recall, so there were fewer vehicles available last year. What’s more, when it brought the vehicles back on the market it did so making the pricing exceedingly attractive—even for people who otherwise wouldn’t have considered an EV.

Then there are two other EVs in the GM portfolio:

  • Cadillac Lyriq
  • Hummer EV

As for Cadillac, it delivered 1,348 Lyriqs in Q2 and a total of 2,316 during the first half. The vehicle wasn’t available during the first half of 2022 so there is no comparison.

As for the Hummer EV, there were 47 deliveries in Q2 and a total of 49 for the first half. Yes, two were delivered in Q1 2023. Those numbers are down 82.7 and 86.8%, respectively. There were 185 days between January 1 and June 30. 49 Lyriqs.

All in, General Motors sold 36,024 electric vehicles during the first half of 2023.

To put that number in perspective, know that it sold 78,169 Chevy Malibus during the same period, and while nary a word is pronounced about the importance of that midsize sedan to its future portfolio, for the past few years there have been more pronouncements about how EVs are going to be transformative to the company’s fortunes than mere mortals can imagine.

Of course, “Past performance is no guarantee of future results.”

But there are two factors that need to be kept in mind.

  1. GM has announced Bolt production will end in November. On the Chevrolet shopping site it is able to proclaim that the Bolt is “America’s Most Affordable EV.” Strike that from the books.
  2. When the Chevy Silverado EV was first announced the company talked about the WT (as in “work truck”) trim starting at about $39,900. However, it recently said that when the first WTs roll off the line, they will be 4WT trim, capable of 450 miles and featuring AWD, for a price of . . .$79,800

Hard to see how the company is going to have sustainably large EV sales numbers as it goes into the future.

It may have the capacity–lots of capacity–but there are another two factors that come into play:

  1. Execution
  2. Market demand for vehicles that aren’t necessarily leading in affordability.

EV Trucks & Three-Card Monte

When Chevrolet announced the Silverado EV last year, it said that the price for the initial work truck version would have an “Estimated MSRP staring around $39,900.”

That was for the work truck version. Get the contractors in and those who are simply looking to look cool will follow. Possibly in droves.

What does the Silverado EV 4WT work truck, which is presently in production, cost?

$79,800.

There is a forthcoming 3WT version with a decreased range from the 4WT. The 4WT has an EPA rating of 450 miles per charge.

The 3WT will be tagged at $74,800.

What is shocking is that people aren’t more shocked by this estimation being off by some 50%.

When the 2024 Chevy Equinox EV was introduced last fall, the claim Chevy made was “a starting price of around $30,000.”

Mary Barra, GM chair and CEO, said, “With the flexibility of GM’s Ultium Platform, we are bringing to market vehicles at nearly every price point and for every purpose.”

Really?

The Cadillac Lyriq is on the Ultium platform. It starts at $58,590.

The GMC Hummer EV uses it, too, and good luck finding a price for it on gmc.com. The 2022 Edition 1 model started at $112,595, and while the subsequent models are less expensive, odds are that’s a relative reduction.

Every price point for Thurston Howell III, perhaps.

Kelley Blue Book has it that the average transaction price for an electric vehicle in May was down $9,370 from the price paid in May 2022. Now it is $55,488, or a 14% decrease.

There’s the Silverado EV 4WT 50% increase.

And what expectation should there be that there will be a $30K Equinox, and if there is a $30,000 Equinox will there be a sufficient number such that it won’t be like sightings of the Loch Ness Monster (“I think I saw one. . .”)?

This just isn’t a GM phenomenon.

Ford launched the F-150 Lightning Pro in May 2022 with a starting MSRP of $39,975. By August it was $55,974. At ford.com right now it starts at $59,974.

Of course, at the top of the page for the Lightning it says in a bright blue box:

“Select Models Currently Eligible for $7,500 in Potential Federal Tax Credits.”

Let Uncle Sam mitigate the price increases.

Is This the Definition of Irony?

“Scottsdale, Ariz.Tread Lightly!, a non-profit dedicated to promoting outdoor recreation through stewardship and educational programs, will receive $500,000 from the sale of the first production unit of the 2024 GMC HUMMER EV Edition 1 SUV at the Barrett-Jackson Scottsdale Auction on Jan. 28, 2023.”—GMC news release

While the curb weight of the electric SUV has not been revealed, know that the pickup version of the HUMMER EV crushes the scales at 9,063 pounds.

Presumably the SUV version is not notably—if at all—wispier.

A Look at the Class of 2021

Vehicles, not college grads, that is.

There are lots of new vehicles that have been or will be introduced this year. So on this edition of “Autoline After Hours” we dedicate the show to talking about some of them.

And the “we” includes “Autoline’s” John McElroy; Jennifer Newman, editor-in-chief of Cars.com; Gary Witzenburg, president of the North American Car, Truck and Utility of the Year Awards and freelance journalist, and me.

Among the vehicles discussed:

  • Acura MDX: Fourth generation of the utility. Three rows. Edgier styling. Solid suspension. What’s not to like? Apparently the True Touchpad Interface.
  • Buick Envision: A crossover with meticulous attention to detail, inside and out. Does the fact that it is made in China have anything to do with that?
  • Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing and CT4-V Blackwing: A lesser bat-out-of-hell (the 4 has a 472-hp engine) and a full-blown one (the 5 has a 668-hp engine).
  • Chevy Bolt EUV: The second electric vehicle (EV) in the lineup that looks more like an SUV, presumably to appeal to those who can’t get enough of that body style.
  • Ford Bronco: A hard-core off-road vehicle, coming soon to a driveway near you. Get the Sasquatch Package and get extra ground clearance and the approach and departure angles that make climbing rocks not an issue. Get the optional Honda
  • GMC HUMMER EV Pickup. 1,000 hp 11,500 lb-ft of torque. 0 to 60 mph in 3 seconds. 350+ miles of driving range. Fast charge up to 100 miles in 10 minutes. You can’t get a reservation for Edition 1, which is coming out this fall and has an MSRP of $112,595. In the fall of 22 there will be more available with a reduced price: $99,995.
  • Honda Civic Sedan: The 11th generation appears to be what will bring Honda back to being Honda. Which should make sedan enthusiasts every enthusiastic.
  • Hyundai Santa Cruz and Tucson and IONIQ 5: whether it is a little truck-like vehicle, a compact sport ute that comes with two flavors of hybrid as well as a conventional ICE powertrain, or a fully electric crossover, seems that Hyundai is the Overachiever of the Year.
  • Kia Carnival: Don’t call this a “minivan.” Don’t.
  • Nissan Frontier: It has been a while since Nissan has brought out a new version of its pickup (e.g., the one that is out now appeared in. . . 1998), so they’ve clearly had time to get this one right.
  • Rivian R1T: Will this electric pickup from a startup be a success in the market?
